Apple Rolls – 2012 1st Place : Cakes, Breads, and Cookies

1 ½ cups self-rising flour
3 Tbls. shortening
Enough milk to moisten flour
½ cup margarine
2 cups water
1 ¼ cups sugar
1 ½ tsp. vanilla
3 ½ cups apples, peeled and chopped
½ cup brown sugar
1 ½ tsp. cinnamon
Mix flour and shortening; moisten with milk. Chill.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a 9×13-inch baking dish, add margarine, water, sugar, vanilla. Let mixture get hot. Stir occasionally.
Roll chilled dough into a large circle. Sprinkle apples, brown sugar and cinnamon on dough. Roll up as you would a jelly roll. Cut into 1 ½ inch slices and drop into hot butter mixture. Bake slowly until golden brown or about 1 hour.
